When it comes to capturing memories of your newborn, I feel that choosing the right outfit can make or break the overall look of the photos. So if you are asking your self “what should I wear to a newborn photo shoot”, I promise to make this very easy.
A newborn photoshoot is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to freeze this special moment in time, so I know you are wondering what you should wear. Believe it or not I actually recommend saying on the more casual and comfy side fo mom and dad. I will style your baby, so you dont have to worry about the little one, so that one check off of your list! I also do have some adorable dresses in neutral colors for little girls so just ask me if you want to use anything in my client closet, but you will need to style outfits for the rest of the family (with my help of course!). Here are some of my tips to help you plan the perfect outfit for your newborn photoshoot.
What to wear to your newborn photography session– First and foremost, comfort is key. For parents who wan to dress your newborn baby in a cute outfit you bought on amazon, here is why I recommend trusting me and keeping it simple when it comes to he outfits .
Your baby will be more relaxed and comfortable if they are cozy. Made from natural, breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, natural fibers, my outfits are designed to fit the newborn body. Many items you can buy from online retailers, as cute and tempting as they may be, are cheap scratchy fabrics or clothing that may irritate your baby’s delicate skin and will not fit properly ( even if they assure you hey will). My Soft and cozy swaddles, and wraps are great options for keeping your baby comfortable during the photoshoot bu if you really want your baby in a cute outfit, I would rather you let me know and reach out for my vendor suggestions before purchasing so I can make sure you buy something that will photograph well, fit your baby, and will actually look great in photos.
Next, consider the color of your outfits. Neutral and muted tones such as white, black, cream, grey and beige are timeless and will not detract from the focus of the photos, which should be your newborn and the connection you have. If you prefer to incorporate some color, consider using pastels or muted shades that complement your baby’s skin tone. I always ask my clients to come in neutrals and keep things very matchy-matchy, unlike family photos where I encourage proper styling and mixing of complimenting color pallets, newborn sessions are mainly sho from he waist up and he focus is on the connection and emotion.
For the parent or parents, it’s important to choose an outfit that complements the colors and style of the photos. Solid colors or simple patterns work well, but honestly I really encourage clients to stick to solids. Consider your own personal style, but keep in mind that the focus should be on your baby, not your outfit. I know it may seem boring but honestly for some of my best parent images during newborn sessions, parents wore black t-shirts and jeans or leggings. You just had a baby, we will take your photos from your waist up, so please dont worry too much about the lower half of your body.
Remember BE COMFORTABLE!
TRUST ME, I will tell you if I know I will need to take full length body shots and will guide you through that process.
When it comes to accessories, less is often more. Simple accessories such as a necklace, earrings, or a watch can add a touch of personality without overpowering the photos. I always recommend parents choose jewelry that means something to them or their family. I have had clients wear necklaces that were family heirlooms to add a special touch and include family members that weren’t able to be present at the session. Remember we will be using adorable pops, beautiful colors, and he cutest accessories to style your newborns photos, that is their time to shine. These photos are about you and your love for the life you just brought into this world.
Do you have other children that you need to style as well? As I mentioned I do have a client closet of little girls dresses hat are always available for use, but if I dont have the size or color you need or you have a little boy or older children, dont worry, is pretty simple to bring everyones outfits together. After you have he adults outfits taken care of, just match you kiddos to wha you are wearing. If mom is wearing a black shirt , but your little girl in a dark grey or black dress your little boy in a black shirt or polo shirt. If you are wearing white, do the same.
Little girls always look adorable in cute dresses and you can go wrong with a polo or button up shirt and some kakis or jeans fo your little boys. To dress older kids, mimic what you are wearing and you cant go wrong. Don’t fret, I will help you style your kids too!
Finally, it’s important to be yourself. When asking yourself “what should I wear to a newborn photo shoot” it feels like there are so many things to think about. While it’s important to consider all of these factors when choosing your outfits, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. Dressing your family for your family’s Newborn pictures really isn’t as difficult as it seams. Remember the photos will capture memories of this special time, and that you and your baby will look beautiful no matter what you’re wearing.
Finally, comfort and simplicity are key. Neutral colors, soft fabrics, and simple accessories ensure that the focus remains on your baby and the memories that we are capturing. With a little planning, consideration and my help, you wont be scared when asking your self What Should I Wear to a Newborn Photo Shoot. With a little help you can create a beautiful set of photographs to cherish for a lifetime.
