Welcoming a newborn into the world is a magical moment that every parent cherishes. The arrival of a newborn brings with it a lot of excitement and joy. Parents try to capture these moments through photographs and videos and now more than ever in this day and age where everyone has a phone in their hand at all times. I encourage parens to capture as many of these moments as they can as much as possible. Newborn photography can help capture these precious memories in a way that you can not on your own, turning your memories into art that you will cherish for years to come. However, getting those perfect photos requires experience and expertise that only a professional newborn photographer can provide. That being said it is hard to know how to choose a Newborn Photographer when their are so many to choose rom.
These moments come and go so quickly and there’s no denying that professional photography is a must. However, with so many options available, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest newborn photographer you can find. Although I am a big supporter of the photography community/ educating new photographers and understand that everyone starts somewhere, handling newborn babies is a very specialized form of photography. It takes a level of experience, training and patience and it is essential to ensure that the safety and well-being of the baby are not compromised during your photography session. You wouldn’t let just anyone care for your baby, would you?
Choosing the photographer who will be handling and posing your vulnerable newborn baby should be a decision hat should be made with just as much care and thought. So how do you know what is important when figuring out how to choose a newborn photographer?
Hiring an experienced newborn photographer can make all the difference when it comes to the quality and value of your photos. In this blog post I will discuss the most important reasons to hire an experienced newborn photographer to capture your special memories
The most important thing when photographing a newborn baby is their safety. An experienced newborn photographer will have the knowledge and expertise necessary to ensure that your baby is safe and comfortable throughout the photoshoot. They know how to position the baby correctly and safely without causing any discomfort or harm to the baby. A Newborn Photographer understand the physiology of the newborns and know how to ensure their safety during the photography session. They will know how to use props safely, and will have a variety of options available to cater for your baby’s unique needs. A professional photographer will ensure that the environment is safe and comfortable for the baby. They will take care to maintain a comfortable temperature, use safe and non-toxic props, and ensure that the baby is not exposed to any harmful substances.
At Imprinted Photography we specifically have invested in many soothing and posing aids to make the session go as smoothly as possible and keep your newborn safe and comfortable throughout the many transitions that take place during the session. In addition, we also hold many certifications and have trained under many Internationally respected Newborn Photographers and infant health professionals to assure that we stay up to date on the latest medical and posing information that is out there.
An experienced newborn photographer will have the skills, knowledge, and equipment necessary to produce high-quality images that you will cherish for years to come. They will have an eye for detail, creativity, and composition, ensuring that every shot is perfectly crafted. They also use high-quality cameras, lighting, and other equipment, which is an investment in their business and ultimately ensures that you receive the best quality images possible. Newborn Photography is its own genre requiring completely different equipment and techniques, a lot of it is very different than other types of portrait photography.
Hiring a regular photographer who dabbles in newborn photos or claims they have “done” them before can mean that heir level of knowledge and skill is very different than a photographer who specializes specifically in newborns. Ask to see photos and compare to others you have seen, although he phrase “you get what you pay for” is relevant here you will be able to tell someones experience by asking hem a few targeted questions. ( see our blog post about what to ask your Newborn Photographer before hiring them).
Newborn photography requires a high level of attention to detail to get those perfect shots. An experienced newborn photographer will take the time to perfect each shot, ensuring they capture every detail, from positioning your baby’s little fingers so that they perfectly cup the sides of their face to coordinating the color of wraps accessories and the background. They will have an eye for creativity and composition, ensuring that each photo is unique and special.
Newborn photographers know how to make your baby look their best because they know the proper angles, poses and editing techniques. They will ensure that the lighting, props, and environment are perfect for the baby. An experienced newborn photographer should have many props, wraps, headbands and other accessories to style each session perfectly.

Newborns grow and change quickly, so it’s important to capture those precious moments as soon as possible as babies grow and change so quickly in those first few weeks of life.. An experienced newborn photographer will work efficiently and quickly to capture all the necessary shots within a short time frame. They will know how to work around your baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule, ensuring that your baby is comfortable and happy throughout the photoshoot.
Because I have been a Newborn Photographer for so long I understand how stressful scheduling your newborn session can be. Because of his I always work with my clients to make sure that it is as stress-fee as possible by giving clients a time frame and allowing them to tell me up until hours before the session what the exact session time will be so that we can work around the every changing feeding schedule of a newborn baby.
That being said, an experienced newborn photographer also knows exactly when to schedule your newborn session. In stead of giving an exact week of life or age a newborn needs to be for their session, a seasoned newborn photographer knows that every baby is different and should be scheduled on an individual basis. In addition although the best time to schedule a newborn session would be when a baby is sleeping fo 3-4 hours in between feeds, experienced newborn photographers are able to successfully photograph babies outside of that time if necessary. They should also be able to properly prepare you so that you know what to expect during an older newborn session so that you can make the proper decision or you and your family.
Experience is priceless when it comes to newborn photography. Professional newborn photographers have the experience and expertise necessary to handle any situation that may arise during a photoshoot. They have seen it all and know how to handle any challenge that comes their way. They know how to calm a fussy baby and how to adjust their approach to suit the personality of your little one. The result is a stress-free, enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
An experienced newborn photographer has the knowledge and experience in posing and handling newborns safely. They know the different techniques and positions that are safe and comfortable for the baby. They will take the time to understand the baby’s needs and ensure that the poses and positions used are safe and comfortable for the baby. Also including editing techniques to safely achieve certain shots that would be unsafe to capture without hands on he baby. This is what we call “composite” shots, and unexperienced photographers that do not utilize these editing and shooting techniques are putting your baby in danger when putting them in unsafe positions without safety precautions. It takes a lot of experience to know when and how to use these techniques and not just to use them but to make it look effortless when used in a polished photo.
When it comes to photography, you get what you pay for. While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest option, this may not provide you with the best value for your money. An experienced newborn photographer will provide you with high-quality images that you will cherish for years to come, making them a worthwhile investment for your family.
They will maintain a professional attitude and approach during the photography session and with their business as a whole. They will ensure that they work within their professional boundaries and follow all the necessary protocols and guidelines. This will very often be evident with the experience they provide to their clients and their eagerness to educate their clients when in comes to questions about why they do the things they do. They should always put your baby’s safety first above any requests from the client but also should try educate clients enough before the session so that they understand what is going to happen when and why. Trusting your photographer is key!
